About the team

The LSC was founded in 2010 by Julian Marshall, Katie Whitehouse and Paul Hussell.   All the London Song Company directors are songwriters themselves, and each believe passionately in THE SONG as a form of expression and art.

At the heart of the London Song Company is Julian Marshall

JULIAN MARSHALL, Founder Director, Creative Director, Composer and Senior Tutor

Julian was educated at Dartington Hall School and The Royal College of Music. He is known internationally as co-creator (with Kit Hain) of the 70’s group Marshall Hain – known especially for their massively successful international hit Dancing in the City in the late 70’s. He was also a member of The Flying Lizards – who scored a top 5 hit with Money in 1979.  In the 80’s he formed the group Eye to Eye with American songwriter and performer Deborah Berg – recording two classic albums for Warner Brothers produced by Steely Dan producer Gary Katz and a latter day third album produced by Roxy Music producer Rhett Davies.

Julian has produced records, has played as a session musician on both sides of the Atlantic, been an A&R man for Boulevard Records in LA and a Senior A&R man for Polydor Records in the UK.

He has enjoyed many years combining his love of teaching with his love of composition and playing. He runs his own highly successful teaching practice and has taught and lectured at various instututions including Dartington College of Arts, Plymouth University, Dartington International Summer School of music and is currently lecturing on the MA course at Middlesex University.

This is what James Wyllie, Music Lawyer and Manager says about Julian”s teaching and mentoring: “Julian does everything with a light touch and consistent good humour.  He does not try to force artists along pre-conceived channels (one of the great failings of the music industry generally) or to push them creatively in a direction that he has chosen for them  - rather he helps them to get the best out of themselves and to become more themselves.  That process requires a level of humility and patience that is rare in somebody as talented as Julian but when he engages with someone he invariably makes a friend for life.”

Composing credits include, (as well as the many songs for above named bands), the score for Orion pictures film ‘Old Enough’ (directed by Marissa Silver); ‘The Clock of the Long Now’ (with text by poet Rose Cook) for Plymouth Symphony Orchestra and several combined school choirs; the score for the short film ‘Still Life’ (directed by Emma George), the cantata ‘Out of the Darkness’ (written for soprano soloist Melanie Pappenheim), score for the play ‘Shakespeare’s’ Will’ (Clwyd Theatre, March 2010).  ‘The Angel in the Forest’ (written for James Gilchrist and Lucy Railton) premiered in November 2010.

KATIE WHITEHOUSE

Marketing Director and Songwriter

Katie’s background is in business, communication and marketing.

She also writes and arranges songs for acapella groups, choirs and other singers, as well as writing and performing her own songs.   She has always had a passion for poetry and harmony and was inspired by Julian”s song writing courses to reveal her original material to a wider audience.

PAUL HUSSELL LLB

Financial Director, Legal Advisor and Songwriter

Paul helps with legal matters for the SWC having been a lawyer for over 20 years. He is Company Secretary for a new and vibrant commercial radio station based in Plymouth as well as holding directorships in 3 other companies, including a sizable Plc. He is delighted to be involved with the Association having been an enthusiastic musician when a student. After a gap of nearly 30 years when he played little music and did no song writing at all he was tempted to try one of Julian”s beginner courses in 2009.

Of his experience he says “.. the first course I did was a real leap of faith. Having had a break from playing music for so many years I was very nervous about embarking on the song writing course. However, such was the hand held support and encouragement of Julian and the team that I achieved more that I ever thought possible. I am very pleased to be part of the incredibly experienced team at LSC.

REVIEWS:

“Seeing Juliet Russell on stage, you can’t help, but feel you’re witnessing the birth of a legend. That this is one of those festival moments that people will talk about for years (and pretend they were at). Juliet’s soaring voice has everyone in rapture. They’re swaying on the grass and breaking into spontaneous cheers of delight. She can barely contain her delight at the response she’s receiving. During the highlight of her set, “Easy Baby”, it’s hard to tell who is having more fun – Juliet or the audience! On CD, Juliet is a warm mixture of smoky vocals, thoughtful tunes and Orbit-style production. Live though, it’s the soulful side of the music that shines through. Juliet’s backing singers are so perfect, and her band plays so tight that she actually sounds better on stage!”Joe Bibby, NOW UK magazine

“A gorgeous, jazzy vocal”  DJ magazine / Record review

”The first track ‘Lazy’ managed to stop the whole room talking, and with a cello uniquely used as a percussive instrument at times, she really didn’t need much help in getting the audience’s well deserved attention. ‘Oh Damn’ resembled the poppiness of Kylie’s more recent hits, but with a haunting dropped down section that has the deeper, darker feel of Bjork.”  Manilla (Music website)

“She delivered to a totally tuned in and turned on audience”  Event Magazine / Live Review

“This is just a perfect summer pop song with knobs on”  The Hit Sheet about Easy Baby

“Juliet Russell’s voice has an incredible sensuality – an unforgettable experience” Connect Magazine / Live preview

“Alternating ethereal, breathy vocals and soulful strength, this woman can deliver”  Bigmouth Magazine
